Memphis arrived to much promise in the summer of 2015. Comparisons with Ronaldo could be found. We expected goals. We expected him to have the crowd on their feet. He simply didn't deliver. Memphis scored 28 goals in his final season in Holland, his first in England saw only 7. Not the WORST return ever, but a lot less than we expected he would get.
Much of his first season seemed to be him settling. Settling to a new city, the culture of Manchester United and the expectation of playing for a club of this stature. There were rumoured run-ins with senior United players over his attitude and his 'flashiness'.
But a fresh start this season is seemingly forging a fresh attitude from Memphis. He's looking to let his football do the talking. He's working hard in training and he's impressing Jose Mourinho. Memphis has always had the talent and has shown his desire in the few minutes he's had so far this season. It's just not been enough for him to stake a claim and show what is possible. It doesn't look like that's likely outside of a Europa game, either. But fortunately we have a couple of those coming up, where I would love to see him given a full 90 mins. I think he can still be a success here.
We're running a poll at the moment about Memphis, have your say. Can he be a success? Vote now!
Can Memphis succeed at Manchester United? If yes, how? If no, why not?
