There are problems at Manchester United. There are problems in the Academy. While our U21s won the league again, several players managed to get first-team debuts and with Rashford setting the world on fire, the U18s struggled. They suffered 12 consecutive losses and parted ways with our manager. There's mitigating circumstances but at United we are realists. We demand and expect excellence at all age levels and when we don't get that we are not afraid to be critical of ourselves and introspective enough to work out why.
Nicky Butt's appointment as Academy Director raised a few eyebrows but the noises now coming from Carrington suggest Butt was an astute appointment who is going about his work in the same ruthless and no-nonsense manner we saw him execute on the pitch as a player.
We recorded a video with United author and historian Tony Park talking about those changes in the academy and mainly who we think will come through and what we expect of both the U23s and the U18s this season. It's always a pleasure to speak to Tony about the academy and I think that comes across in this video. So please check it out and give us your thoughts!
A player we haven't spoken about in this video was Angel Gomes. His potential has been known for years. His ability clear for anyone who watches him for just five minutes. But lately, his form, his ability, his touch, his control of games, his passing - basically everything that he's done in the last few games is nothing short of breathtaking. I'm running out of words. I'll say simply this: I remember seeing Pogba and Morrison in the academy and he is THAT good. The future is looking bright. I did a Facebook live stream from Carrington today, right after the game, completely soaking, but all smiles after a great victory, have a look!
