Manchester United have been rocked by the loss of Eric Bailly for two months as a result of a knee injury, with Jose Mourinho dropping a surprise hint that Paul Pogba could be the man to drop in and cover for the centre-back.
Pogba has struggled to live up to his reputation following his world-record transfer back to Manchester in August but Mourinho might now try something new with the Frenchman by playing him at the heart of the United defence.
"He can play in so many positions," he told Sky Sports ahead of Wednesday's EFL Cup game against Manchester City. "He's a top player and I think he could be a phenomenal central defender.
"With the quality of his pass, with his aerial game, with his agility in such a big body, for his defensive side of the game, coming from the back with the ball, he would be a phenomenal central defender."
Mourinho's comments sparked some debate on Twitter on Wednesday, with the talk of the Frenchman becoming a central defender taking over.
United fans were left angered by Mourinho's comments, with Pogba renowned for being one of the world's best box-to-box midfielders.
Supporters on social media reacted with a lot of negativity towards the suggestion that the £89 million man might now be dropped back, with almost half of the United fanbase left angry.
There will be plenty of attention on Mourinho's team sheet for tonight's EFL Cup Derby clash with Manchester City at Old Trafford, with Pogba potentially starting at centre-back.
